Reading Skill

I am learning how to make INFERENCES when I read.

I know I can do it when I can understand what is happening by:

  • using what I already know (my prior knowledge)
  • using things I read or see (clues)

Lets begin:

Watch this video to help your understanding of making inferences.

Independent Activity

Now, have a go on your own.

  1. Open your green lined book.
  2. Rule a line under any previous work to rule off.
  3. Write today’s date.
  4. Write the heading “ Inference”

Open this document and read 4 poems. Each poem gives clues (infers) what it is about.

After reading the four poems, copy the sentences starters below into your green book and finish the sentence with the answer.

  1. A Taste of the Goodlife: I am a ……
  2. The Cold Hard Facts: I am a…
  3. Presto Change: I am a…
  4. Feeling Tied Down: I am a….

Arrays Around Us

I am learning to identify arrays around me in everyday life.

I know I can do it when I can identify arrays in the world around me.

Explore

There are many arrays around your home.

Example:

This photo of windows is an example of an array.

There are 6 windows, 2 rows of 3.

The number sentences that represents this are:

2×3=6

3×2=6

6÷2=3

6÷3=2

This is an example of a fact family.

Here’s another example

This is a photo of the Spalding rules in Mr. Lee’s classroom in Grade 1.

There are 29 rules, 4 rows of 6 and 1 row of 5.

The number sentences that represents this are:

29÷4=6 r.5

Here you have 6 equal groups with 5 remainder.

29÷6=4 r.5

Here you have 4 equal groups with 5 remainder.

Independent Activity

Step 1. Explore your home and find at least 5 different arrays.

Step 2. Take a photo or draw a picture of them.

Step 3. In your book, write the number sentences (equations) to match your array.

Challenge: Can you find any arrays that have remainders, like the Spalding rules in Mr. Lee’s classroom?
