Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories – The Rainbow Serpent

The Rainbow Serpent is considered one of the most powerful Aboriginal Stories.

It describes a time long ago when the Earth was flat. The serpent emerged from under the ground to awaken different groups of animals.

The movement of its body formed physical features like hills, gorges, creeks and rivers into the once-featureless landscape.

It slithered all over the country, occupying waterholes and providing nourishing water. Once it grew tired with shaping the Earth, it coiled into a waterhole where it lays to this day.

Aboriginal legend states the sleeping place of the Rainbow Serpent is Uluru. Because of this belief, Uluru is considered a sacred site in Aboriginal culture.

Measurement

I am learning to use measuring equipment to take accurate measurements.

I know I can do it when I can determine the length of my body using scaled measuring instruments (rule, tape measure)

Measure Me

Why are body measurements useful?
They can help you buy the right size clothes, track your growth and know if it is safe for you to go on a theme park ride!

So have a go at accurately measuring yourself.

Step 1

Draw the picture below of this body, this body represents you.

Step 2

Find a measuring tape or string and a ruler.

Step 3

Decide which section you want to measure first e.g. shoulder to tip of hand.Carefully line up the measuring tape (or string) along the distance, making
sure it is straight and there are no bends. If using string, mark the length
then use a ruler to measure.

Draw a line on the body template to show where you measured and write
the length in cms.

Measure at least 5 different areas on your body, eg. arm length, leg length, distance around your head (circumference) and write the length in cms.
