Grammar

I am learning to use speech marks when writing to show the actual speech someone says.

I know I can do it when I use speech marks correctly in sentences.

Let’s start:

  • Read the text and questions a few times till you understand them.
  • Then you are ready to write out the answers only, in your green exercise book.
  • Rule a line under any previous work to rule off.
  • Write today’s date next to the margin:
  • Write the heading: Flies
  • Write the number of the question in your book and then write your answer next to it.

Now watch this video before going on to the next activity.

Literacy Task

I am learning to make text to world connections when I read.

I know I can do it when I can think of how the story reminds me of real things in the world.

When Pigasso Met Mootisse: Laden, Nina: 0765145011211: Amazon.com: Books

Book Title: When Pigasoo Met Mootisse

  2. Rule a line under any previous work to rule off.
  3. Write today’s date:
  4. Write the heading “When Pigasoo Met Mootisse
  5. Write the number of the question and then your answer next to it.

  2. Do you think they remained friends? Why? Why Not?

Making Text-to-World Connections:

Pablo Picasso was a real artist who created a new style of art call Cubism. The style used bright colours and geometric shapes.

Look at these Pablo Picasso artworks and then complete the activity below.

Pablo Picasso Art Activity:

My Aim: to create a self-portrait (picture of myself) in the cubism style

Steps:

  1. Draw a large oval in the centre of your page. Divide the oval in half using a zig-zag or squiggly line.
  2. Draw three or more eyes, two noses, and two mouths. These can be drawn anywhere on the “face.”
  3. Using geometric shapes (triangles, rectangles, squares, etc), add ears and hair. There can be more than two ears and they may be located anywhere along the side of the “face.”
  4. Draw a triangle below the face for the neck and shoulders.
  5. Add a pattern of geometric shapes inside the large triangle neck.
  6. Geometric shapes can be added to the background if desired.
  7. Trace the drawing with a black texta.
  8. Colour the portrait using bold colours.
  9. If using crayons, press hard so the colours will be bright.

Consider these examples to inspire your own creation!

Reading Skill

I am learning about the reading skill “Compare and Contrast”.

I know I can do it when I can:

  • Find similarities (things that are the same)
  • Identify differences (things that are different)
  • Use connectives (linking words) in a sentence to express if an idea is:

a) the same

b) different

OK, let’s begin!

1.Start by studying the poster below.

2.Go through it a few times till you understand the linking words that help us compare and contrast things.

Practise the skill

Let’s examine the pictures below and think what is

  • the same
  • different

Possible answers might include:

SameDifferent
I wash in both the shower and the bath.
I wash in the shower and the bath too.
I wash in the shower as well as the bath.
I soak in bath water but I rinse under the shower.

I can blow bubbles in the bath water whereas I can not blow bubbles in the shower.

Now, have a go on your own.

Independent Activity

  1. Open your green lined book.
  2. Rule a line under any previous work to rule off.
  3. Write today’s date:
  4. Write the heading “ Compare and Contrast”

Now, you’re ready to begin your task.

Instructions

Look at the picture of a polar bear and penguin above.

Using a ruler, draw a table like this:

SameDifferent

Under the headings, record your ideas about:

  • What a polar bear and penguin have in common (what is the same)
  • How a polar bear and penguin vary (what is different)

Use the linking words below to turn your ideas into sentences. Write your sentences underneath the grid.
