Related Facts

Learning intention: I am learning to see the relationship between addition and subtraction and how fact families can be extended.

I know I’m successful when I can make connections beyond basic fact families.

Counting

There are 46 sultanas in a box.

Draw 2 different ways to arrange them to make it easy to count.

Here is a different example below:

Sultana

Related Facts

If I know that

6 + 4 = 10

This helps me know other facts too.

For example:

4 + 6 = 10

10 – 6 = 4

10 – 4 =6

40 + 60 = 100

100 – 60 = 40

100 – 40 = 60

16 + 4 = 20

14 + 6 = 20

26 + 4 = 30

20 – 6 = 14

50 – 6 = 44

Etc.

Can you see that the above equations have a connection?

Independent Task

Write down as many facts as you can for the following:

  • 9 + 1 = 10
  • 7 + 3 = 10
  • 2 + 8 = 10
  • 5 + 5 = 10

  • Rule a line under any previous work to rule off.
  • Write today’s date.
  • Write the heading “Counting Collections”

Activity 1

Fill a cup with pasta, Lego, etc… Tip it out and count.   How many ways can you count the objects?

Is there a way that you can group them to make it easy to see the total, almost straight away.

Show your thinking in your green book.

 Activity 2

I am thinking of two numbers. When I add them together, the total is 16. How many ways can you do this?
Use the objects from the above counting activity to show your thinking.

Now try another number.
