Concept: Natural, Managed and Man-made Features

I am learning to identify natural and man-made features in our environment.

I know I can do it when I have identified some natural and man-made features.



This week we are going to learn about some different features in our environment. We can classify our environment into three categories, by their different features:  

Natural 

Man-made  

Managed  

Today we are going to focus on natural and man-made features.

Natural Features – Are part of the land. They have not been created by humans.  

Man-made Features – Have been created by humans.  

Managed Features – Are natural features that are managed and maintained by people.

Independent Learning 

Your task today is to see if you can find some examples of natural and man-made features in your local environment.  

You may want to go for a walk with your family to spot some of these features.  

OR  

You could have a discussion and a brainstorm with your mum, dad or another family member.  

You will need to:  

• Open your scrapbook and write the date at the top.  
• Write the heading ‘natural or man-made’. 
• Copy this table (the first two have been done for you):

Battleship

I am learning to locate positions on a map using map references.

I know I can do it when I can use map references to find a position on a map.

Who has played battleship before? Today, you’re going to become a navy officer, firing missiles at your enemy. You will need a partner to play this game, you can follow the steps below to create 2 grids for each player before inviting a family member to join you.

Step 1. Set up both grids with a set number of coordinates in your grid book, e.g. A-G horizontally along the top of the page, 1-12 along the vertical side of the page. One grid is to record the missiles that you fire and the other is to place your battleships.

Step 2: Create ships (4 ships: one is 5 grids, one 4 grids, one 3 grids, one 2 grids and one is 1 grid)

Step 3: Students to create a key and name their ships, display the key to their partner.

Step 4: One player fires first, e.g. C2. The other player says, hit (e.g. my Battleship) or miss. The student who fires records the hit or miss on their second grid (the person who has been fired AT can record it on their grid with their battleships).

Step 5: The other person fires and it continues. When a ship is sunk, that player tell the other that. Play continues until one player has lost all their ships.

Treasure Hunt

Can you read a map and follow directions? Well if you can chances are you can help us find the buried treasure. You’ll need to know right from left, east from west, clockwise from anti-clockwise and over from under. Got all that? See you at Buccaneer’s Refuge ‘me hearties, arrgh’. Remember X marks the spot!

I know I can do it when I can give directions to help someone find a place on a map.

Challenge

Give directions to someone in your home, start from your bedroom and direct them to the kitchen. Use the words ‘ahead’, ‘left’ and ‘right’ in your directions.
