Puzzling Patterns

I am learning to describe growing patterns and continue the patterns.

I know I can do it when I can identify what a number pattern increases by and continue the pattern.

Watch

Getting Started

  1. Open your green lined book.
  2. Rule a line under any previous work to rule off.
  3. Write today’s date.
  4. Write the heading “Puzzling Patterns”

I am trying to solve some number patterns with missing numbers. Can you help him?

Complete the number patterns and sentences below.

___, 53, 57,___, 65, ___

This pattern increases ___ each time.

37, ___, 59, 70___ , ___

This pattern increases by ___ each time.

___, 34, 54, ___

This pattern increases ___ each time.

Create Your Own

Write another number pattern with missing numbers for a family member to solve.

Now Try This

Below a number pattern is shown.

2, 6, 10, 14, ___, ___, ___.

What are the next 3 numbers in the pattern?

The next 3 numbers are ___, ___, ___.

Which operation is being used to make this pattern?

Select the correct word to complete the sentence.

  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Division

The operation being used is_______________.

Area

I am learning to to use everyday objects to compare areas of irregular 2D shapes.

I know I can do it when I can find the area of an object using different units to measure.

Study the examples below

We can use objects to measure area informally, for example:

  • using counter

I have covered Humpty Dumpty’s wall with counters to see how many counters it takes to cover the wall.

Count how many counters I used.

28 counters

They are organised in 4 rows and 7 columns.

4 x 7 = 28

Next I chose a different objects to measure area (informally), for example:

  • a matchbox car.

Again, I covered Humpty Dumpty’s wall, this time with matchbox cars to see how many cars it takes to cover the wall.

Count how many cars you used.

4 cars

They are organised in 2 rows and 2 columns.

2 x 2 = 4

Comparison

It took 28 counters to cover Humpty Dumpty’s wall, compared to 4 matchbox cars.

Independent Activity

Following the example above, measure the area of an object in your home using 2 different informal measurements so you can compare.

You could measure a:

  • framed picture
  • cereal box
  • favourite book
  • etc.

You could use different objects to measure (make sure they are the same size like the example).

Examples of objects used to measure:

  • cars
  • counters
  • Lego (same size pieces)
  • playing cards
  • etc.

Record your results in your green book.

For example:

I used __ ________ to cover ___________.

Repeat and measure 3 different items twice (using 2 different informal measurements) and record your results.

Position

I am learning to follow directions showing the position of objects.

I know I can do it when I can place objects in the following positions:

  • inside
  • above
  • behind
  • between
  • outside
  • through
  • below
  • under
  • beside

Watch and see if you can identify the language of position.
